The Devil Dared Me To![]()
Section:
Elements of CrimeDirected by: Chris Stapp New Zealand, 2007 Dir.: Chris Stapp Follow Randy Campbell as he attempts to follow in his father’s footsteps and become New Zealand’s greatest daredevil stuntman… No matter who loses a limb in the process. The film is unashamedly rude and crude and as subtle as a punch to the jaw. If you love sick humour (there is blood and pain galore), enjoyably stupid stunts (leaping a line of upside down lawnmowers for instance) and testosterone fuelled antics then this is definitely the film for you. In fact The Devil Dared Me To is practically guaranteed to become a staple of late-night viewing, no doubt accompanied by a six-pack or two. “Years ago back in the mid-nineties we were smashing up handycams making no-budget splatter movies with our drunken friends when I happened to catch a show one hungover sunday called When Stunts go Wrong. For some reason (probably the hangover) I found it really funny and started jotting down a storyboard based on the show, then we went out into a carpark and reshot it, shot-for-shot, but featuring a vodka swilling stuntman named Randy Cambell and his incompetent stunt co-ordinator Dick Johansonson. Randy's first stunt was to lie on the ground and let a car run over him. His legs were horribly crushed. Dick sprayed him in the face with a fire extinguisher.” (Chris Stapp)
