Ngo Quang Hai arrived to Titanic Festival with
Pao’s story, the first directing début of this young actor. He gave the main role to his wife, Do Thi Hai Yen, who became famous after playing in The Quiet American. The story – set in the mountains – was filmed in just 40 days with a very low budget, after a long process of research to find the best original settings. Ngo Quang set out to portray the life of the hmong, a Vietnamese tribe that originated from Alaska. The film focuses on the drama of three strong-willed women, as told from Pao’s perspective, compiling a kind of women’s unit with her mother and stepmother. The director, who made short TV films before his celluloid début, was influenced by western filmmakers: French, Canadian, and American films and filmmakers inspired him the most. The Oscar-nominee film from Vietnam starts at
20:15 on the 6th in Uránia Cinema.
