The Vuillards are a complicated family, touched by a tragedy. Years ago Abel and Junon had a child, who died of a genetic illness. Junon has discovered she is suffering from the same disease. Her only hope is to find a bone-marrow donor among the members of her family. The eldest child, Elizabeth, is a playwright, Henri is an alcoholic and the youngest Ivan is the most unaffected of them. At Christmas the family reunites – as they attempt to plan the future, their own private tragedies fester between them.
