Last year Guillermo del Toro surprised festivalgoers, when he appeared to view his friend, Daniel Gruener's competing film. This morning another surprise guest arrived from Mexico City: Daniel Gruener's student.
Fernando Fidel Urdapilleta Jiménez is a student in one of Mexico City's largest film school, and made a short film, Pretty Little Things, about the macho world of Mexico. The story about a protagonist finding her way to get rid of a despotic father, pushy teacher, and a boyfriend that actually bought her, is the diploma work of the young filmmaker. Daniel Gruener, who was the Mexican competitor at last year's event was his supervisor in making the film, and they share many common features in their sense of grotesque humour.
What a luck that Fernando made it to Budapest before the Closing Gala; this way he's able to support Fransisco Franco-Alba's competing film (Burn the Bridges). Especially so, as young Fernando's classmates were involved in making the film.
