
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
released their shortlist of nine foreign-language films, which will be whittled down to five Oscar nominees on January 22:
“3 Monkeys,” Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Turkey)
“Departures,” (Yojiro Takita, Japan)
“Everlasting Moments,” (Jan Troell, Sweden)
“Revanche,” (Gotz Spielmann, Austria)
“Tear This Heart Out,” Roberto Sneider, Mexico)
“The Necessities of Life,” (Benoit Pilon, Canada)
“The Class,” (Laurent Cantet, France)
“The Baader Meinhof Complex,” (Uli Edel, Germany)
“Waltz with Bashir,” (Ari Folman, Israel)
The narrowed list of 9 nominees omitted such favourites as the Italian Gomorra (Matteo Garrone), Thomas Alfredson’s Let The Right One In (Norway), or the French film, I've Loved You So Long (Philippe Claudel), as well as the Hungarian entry, Iszka’s Journey, directed by Csaba Bollók. Hugh Jackman (Australia, The Prestige) will host this year’s Academy Awards in the spring, which is going to be the 81st Oscar Gala to date.
