Sundance 2010 launches

The 2010 Sundance Film Festival, the premier showcase for the independent cinema, kicked off on 21st January in Park City, Utah. Over the course of the ten day event nearly 200 American and international dramatic and documentary films will be presented.

Backed by veteran actor Robert Redford, Sundance is returning to its roots. At the opening event Redford spoke out about his mission to get back to the festival’s “fresh and new” fashion from previous years. Audiences “will sense the risk the filmmaker took to tell that story and how important it was to get a certain new truth out,” Redford stated about this year’s event.

So far the most talked about film was Howl by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. The film is centred on the obscenity trial Allen Ginsberg faced after the publication of his poem, Howl. Other highly anticipated indie flicks include The Runaways based on a girl punk band from the 1970s featuring Twilight star Kristin Stewart and The Killer Inside Me starring Kate Hudson and Casey Affleck.
