Let England Shake

Section:
United Kingdom 2011

Phot.: Seamus Murphy
Colour
75 mins

P.J. Harvey’s latest album Let England Shake is already a strong contender for album of the year. The twelve songs are all accompanied by social poetic depictions of everyday life in the country as seen through photographer Seamus Murphy’s lens, now turned cinematographer, and presented together as an unbroken whole.

Seamus Murphy’s photography from Afghanistan, which chronicles the tumultuous life of the Afghan people and won him the World Understanding Award, has been published as a book, A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan (2008). Seeing this book and exhibition prompted musician P.J. Harvey to approach Murphy to make a series of films to accompany her album, Let England Shake.
